How Do I Know My Child is Learning?

Feb Blog

At The Sunshine House, your child will build a strong educational and social foundation – with all the fun of childhood mixed in! Everything we do focuses on your child’s development – from social, emotional, intellectual and physical development to literacy, math, science and social studies.

But how do you know if your child is learning?

Learning is different from memorizing.  Being able to count to 10 or recite the ABCs is a sign of your child’s ability to memorize, but not a sign of critical thinking. Critical thinking is developed through trial and error, by exploring the concepts of cause and effect, by practicing new skills, and even by making mistakes.

We believe the best way to help your child succeed is to teach him or her to be a creative, confident thinker. That means offering opportunities for hands-on exploration, building lifelong critical thinking skills, and fostering confidence in your child.

Here are two concrete ways to know that your child is learning:

    • Family-Teacher Conferences
    • Projects & Displays in the Classroom

1. Family-Teacher Conferences

Family-teacher conferences give you a window into your child’s progress. During these meetings, you’ll get:

    • Observational Notes: Written records of how your child is engaging in learning.
    • Work Samples: Examples of your child’s creativity and thinking – from drawings and writings to paintings.
    • Photographs: Images capturing your child’s play and projects, from building structures to artistic creations.

These items encapsulate your child’s thought processes, how he or she solves problems, and their overall creativity. What better indication of learning?

2. Projects & Displays in the Classroom

As you drop off or pick up your child, take a moment to explore the classroom displays and projects. These are excellent ways to see firsthand how your child is learning:

    • Mobile App Updates: Photos or notes showing your child engaged in hands-on development activities.
    • Art & Projects: Displays of individual or group work, including drawings, crafts, and collaborative projects.
    • Seeds of Literacy Displays: These highlights showcase the classroom’s focus on building early literacy skills.

Get a glimpse of the learning process and collaboration happening within the classroom every week. It shows a true story of your child’s progress over time!

Continued Growth & Learning

At The Sunshine House, your child will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. We provide opportunities to discover how things work, that words have meaning, that numbers have patterns, and so much more.

We also support your child’s social and emotional growth. We’ll help your child learn important social skills by taking turns, sharing, handling feelings, and being more independent. Our goal is to encourage, challenge, and facilitate your child’s all-around growth.
